Foggy Windows - Window repair

What Causes Foggy Windows?

Foggy windows are a frequent concern for homeowners. A practical solution is to replace the glass with a new insulating glass unit. Insulating glass, commonly referred to as “double-pane” or “Thermopane” glass, consists of two (or sometimes three) panes of glass separated by a spacer bar. This spacer is sealed with a double layer of sealant around the edges. Inside the spacer bar, desiccants are included to absorb any moisture that may form between the glass layers.

The main reasons for fogging include:

  • Compromised Seals: Water exposure or harsh weather can damage the seals.
  • Temperature Fluctuations: Constant expansion and contraction due to changing climates can weaken the seals over time.
  • Aging: Older windows may have seals that deteriorate, allowing moisture to seep in.

When the seal fails, moist air can infiltrate the unit, saturating the desiccants and leading to visible condensation between the panes.

Is Full Window Replacement Necessary?

In most instances, complete window replacement isn’t required! Many manufacturers design their frames to allow for glass replacement. Choosing to replace just the glass is often a more budget-friendly option compared to replacing the entire window. Our insulating glass units come with a 10-year warranty, ensuring your investment is protected.
